“Authenticity is a beautiful thing but it’s not always easy to live as such. Being a transgender male, I’ve had my fair share of years living unauthentically. Life has never been more beautiful since the day I decided it was time to start living as my true self. Unfortunately, that decision has led to many ups and downs as far as medical needs are concerned. Trans people spend a lot of time diving through hoops just to have basic testing done.

Trans visibility has really increased in the last ten years but there is still a lack of knowledge surrounding the development of our bodies. This is my biggest reason for advocating for easy access to Pap Testing. I have spoken to many trans men that are so stressed about having access to knowledgeable doctors that they will not even try to get the care they so desperately need. There has to be an easier way. A way that makes all bodies feel welcome, no matter their parts.

A few years ago, I was dealing with some pain in my right side, in my stomach area. A simple Pap test gave us the results we needed to conclude that it was time to have a hysterectomy. My test came back abnormal. Coupled with the diagnosis and the pain and discomfort I felt, we knew it was time. Without the access to Pap test, I could have dealt with this issue for years. Now I’m a year and a half post surgery! I feel great and I’m so thankful to not have to deal with the pain I was experiencing. I’m grateful that I had access to doctors and facilities. I believe every person should have access to such basic needs!”
