Storytime about one of the biggest scares of my life. In spring 2018, I had a routine screening and you could never imagine my face when my doctor advised me to have a Pap test. They found some abnormal cells in my cervix and wanted to make sure they were not serious, or if they were, we could spot them early. I WAS PETRIFIED. Imagine, I was alone, in NYC, I had a job that could not help me if the worst happened. When the day came, I was VERY scared. When the results came back, it turned out to be nothing serious. The abnormal cells kinda disappeared (which apparently is very common) but it made me realize how important it is to get your Pap test regularly. But how could I afford them? Well… did you know the Pap is accessible to almost EVERYONE!! The Affordable Care Act covers cancer screenings for most people, including Pap testing for most EVERYONE WITH A CERVIX, making this life-saving check-up accessible no matter what your income level happens to be. Since then, I get checked routinely and it has helped a lot to get to know my body and how to take care of it. Have you ever gotten a Pap test? Do you get women’s checkups often?
